Bourdain believes that people must know their role in the workplace and be humble in order to get promoted in the future. People with strong egos in the workplace sometimes make it difficult for their fellow co-workers to work with them and in doing so can affect the ability or progress of his or her's work environment. For instance, In "Food is pain", the arrogant bourdain discovers his true self within the kitchen during his audition for the Mario crew and is put in his place.

One lesson that Bourdain learns while working in the restraunt business is that it is rare to have your station set to your liking. For instance, in page 58 of kitchen confidential there is a line that states, "The universe is in order when your station is set up the way you like it".
